THE PROJECT DESCRIPTION HAS CHANGED AS OF JANUARY 2019! Starting January 2019, new food regulations dictated by the California Health and Safety Code have changed the way food is served. The entire meal preparation must be made in a COMMERCIAL KITCHEN (i.e. Costco, Winco, Grocery Store Deli, Restaurants, etc.). However, we have some EASY suggestions for you to make this very feasible.
Organization: “Open Door” is a ministry of “In His Steps” which is a Christian based drug and alcohol recovery program for men and women. Open Door feeds homeless and needy individuals and families in the Ramona Community. Every Monday night, eight churches in Ramona rotate this service. Guests are provided a full meal, music, a brief message or testimony and mingling with servers.
Project Description: Bring and serve a COMMERCIALLY prepared meal (i.e. Costco, Grocery Store Deli, Restaurants, etc.) that nourishes our local homeless. In addition to providing the meal, help is needed with: set-up, tear-down of tables and chairs, clean-up of facility, and provide all paper products for serving the meal.
The Meal: Groups should provide a main dish, side dish and salad for 35-40 people. Volunteers are welcome to choose any menu they wish. There is only one small oven to keep food warm so please plan accordingly. If your group would like to eat the meal as well, plan to provide additional servings in order to provide enough food for your group as well. Easy Meal Suggestions
Dessert: Dessert can be something simple like cookies or store-bought pies. Your choice!
Drinks: Two cases of bottled water is optional because coffee and punch are provided. However, don’t forget to bring the paper cups for the hot coffee.
Bring Paper Products/Pantry Items: Please bring serving utensils, paper plates, bowls (if needed), utensils, napkins, paper cups for hot coffee, 1 roll of paper towels, 1 roll of toilet paper and a few large trash bags. Nothing is provided because this facility is used by so many other groups.
Location: Ramona Grange Hall 632, 215 7th Street, Ramona, CA 92065
Timeline:
- 5:30-5:45: Volunteers should arrive by this time and begin setting up tables, chairs and food. Some of the guests will come early to help as well.

Amenities: There are outlets to plug in crock pots/electric skillets, a refrigerator, sink, and a small oven that can be used to keep food warm.
Cost: Cost of the meal you provide.

Nice but not Necessary: If you have gently used clothing you’d like to donate such as t-shirts, pants, or jackets, please feel free to bring them.
***Please Note***
If you are not in a group and would still like to provide a meal, we ask that you involve your family or friends to help. Please do not sign up as an individual because this project requires ten (10!) or more people.
