Meal Project: Providing a nutritious healthy meal is an amazing way to boost the spirits and resilience for the single women and children living in this shelter. There are two great options to get involved. Please let us know which one you prefer.
- Summertime BBQ: It’s BBQ season, so why not grill up some hamburgers or hot dogs and have the best BBQ on the block. Provide all the items for the BBQ and bring the sides to go along with the meal.
- Or, bring a meal that’s commercially prepared and deliver it. To-go meals can be purchased from a restaurant, grocery store deli or Costco. Please make sure to include fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible. Easy meal suggestions!
Dinner Time: Dinner is served at 5:30, so please deliver the meal by 5:15pm (if you are bringing take-out). If you’re planning to grill, please arrive early so that you have time to prepare the meal. Upon arrival and check-in at the front office, you will be directed to the kitchen. We encourage you to stay and serve the meal.
How much to bring? Bring enough for ~30 people. The shelter encourages good nutrition, so please try to bring vegetables, fruits, and proteins.
Number of Servers: The shelter still needs to follow SD County Covid regulations, and thus the residents must eat in shifts. If your group is larger than 4 people, be prepared to split up. Some volunteers may help with cooking, while others can play with the children and spend time with the families.
Amenities: There is an outdoor gas grill, convection oven and all necessary trays, cooking utensils, bowls, etc. that may be used as needed.
Drinks: Please bring a plant-based milk with your meal and 1 case of water bottles.
Can we make the meal at home? Unfortunately, no. The California Health and Safety Code dictates that the meal must be commercially prepared, so it must come from a restaurant, commercial kitchen, deli, grocery store, Costco. Easy meal suggestions!
What else should I bring? Paper products are always greatly appreciated: paper plates, bowls, napkins, cups, forks, knives, spoons and serving utensils. Dessert is optional, however a fresh fruit salad is very popular.
Monetary Donations: Optional! If you’d like to make a monetary donation in lieu of bringing a meal, the money will go towards preparing meals at the shelter. For a one time donation, click here!
